City Lunches

Little King Cafe

Shop 4, 209 Flinders Lane, Melbourne (map)

The cutest little cafe in the city! I love their twee-vintage-chic interior design, the staff are so sweet and it's all just so cosy and welcoming. There are not a lot of vegan options here, but everything is quality, made with love and with mainly organic ingredients. On my first visit I had the amazing pear frangipane tart in the picture, on my second visit (later that week) I had delicious parsnip and carrot soup and a fabulous chocolate brownie. This is my new city go-to for winter afternoon treats, coffee with a friend or anytime I feel like pretending I live in a story book...

Yen Sushi & Noodles

12 centre place, 530 Little Collins street , Melbourne, VIC 3000 (map)

My favourite city sushi spot- only two of the flavours (seaweed salad and tofu with vegetables) are vegan, but they are super fresh and tasty with deliciously nutty brown rice. Best of all you can get a little serve of hot satay sauce to dip them into!

They also do vegie rice paper rolls and have lots of vegan noodle options, which you can take away or perch on a little wooden box to eat in.

Basement Cafe

350 Latrobe street, Melbourne 3000 (map)

Open Monday to Friday for breakfast and lunch.

Sitting at half a level lower than street level, windows open out onto the busy Latrobe St sidewalk just near the corner of Queen and Latrobe in the CBD. I feel so sheltered from the hustle of the business persons in this cosy bunker with the helped of chilled beats, friendly staff and a few vegan options scattered through their little chalkboard menu.

Bircher muesli w fresh berries, smashed avocado with lemon on sourdough (all under $10) til 11.30am and I scored a chunky fruit loaf with marj and a soy latte for $6 at lunchtime!

Yup might just have to ask for marj instead of butter tho...still cheap and filling plus good coffee.

Casual Indian food, They have bain marie curries but I usually get a masala dosa- it’s huge- a big crispy lentil pancake filled with spicy potato and onion- super satisfying and around $6. (Jo)

I think the menu is smaller than the Fitzroy location, but it will still be good!
