Gasometer has recently shifted focus from diner style comfort food to German and Eastern European flavours- although the portions are still huge and carb-tastic. They have serve meat, but have a great vegan selection (and dedicated vegan deep fryer). They have some innovative options- i loved my mushroom schnitzel, giant warm soft pretzel and salted caramel cheesecake- but my stomach was groaning when i finished and I was still full the morning after! Gasometer poses a dilemma, the portions are massive so sides aren't really necessary, but there are so many tempting options I want to taste (especially dessert). You want to arrive with a healthy appetite, but not too hungry as service can be very slow....I've found the best solution is to go with lots of friends so that you can try everything and keep each other entertained while waiting for it to arrive.

Vietnamese. The coleslaw can be made vegan if you ask for no fish sauce. The vege spring rolls are good too, served in lettuce with vietnamese mint. (Also ask for no fish sauce in the dipping sauce) (Kelly)
I agree nothing better than the coldslaw on a hot melburne day (nellie)
I had a bad surprise egg experience here, but maybe it was just a one off (Jo)

This is great Japanese comfort food, meat options as well as lots of vegie dishes- watch out for the sweet potato gyoza. I found out that the contained butter after eating many, many serves (and being told they were vegan). (Jo)

Great place to go with meat eating friends, pub food with an Asian twist, but really fresh, generous serves, with lots of vegan options. Try to get a set in the upstairs roof garden. (Jo)
