Tim Ho Wan Melbourne Web site
We tend to do things differently here. While everyone’s busy queuing up at noon, somewhere in the middle of Bourke Street, we wait until the mad food rush hour is over, just a little before closing time, to partake on our obligatory nibbles.
And yes, we know that everyone has been singing praises for Tim Ho Wan’s famous Cantonese BBQ Pork Buns and Siu Mai, not us though. We’re here for the underdog. The ever immaculate, Chee Cheong Fun or Vermicelli Roll with Sesame Sauce (豬腸粉). Perfecting the rice roll is an art, mastered by a few. For everyone’s curiosity, this Chee Cheong Fun hits the right spot, which brings us to our happy place.
It’s a simple dish, really. The rolls are silky smooth, with just the right amount of sesame sauce, topped delicately with chives and toasted sesame seeds, and bathed in a special plate of soy sauce. The texture is flawless, as a result, once you pop this baby in your mouth, it melts, and brings you an explosion of flavour. It’s remarkably distinct, a little bit sweet and salty, with a hint of bitterness.
Forget about everything else on the menu, this one takes the crown.
The roll is perfect for breakfast or supper.
